March Birthstone: Aquamarine

Celebrate your March birthday with a J. Douglas Jewelers beautiful, custom jewelry piece featuring aquamarine, the official birthstone of March. Known for its clear aqua blue color, aquamarine means “water of the sea,” a name which originated in the early 1700s. These shimmering gems are part of the beryl family of minerals, which also includes emeralds. Aquamarines come in colors ranging from the palest blue to dark blue-greens. They usually have excellent clarity and can be found in quite large sizes.    An interesting characteristic of aquamarine for those who enjoy wearing fine jewelry is that the stone actually looks better under artificial light than daylight, making it a good choice for dinners and other evening events.Regardless of the shade, the color of aquamarine is always beautiful, serene, and peaceful.

Legend has it that aquamarines were the prized possessions of mermaids and would protect sailors from the dangers of the sea, including warding off sea-sickness. The Romans considered the aquamarine as the sailor’s gem, ensuring the safe and prosperous passage across stormy seas. It was also believed to render soldiers invincible.  During World War II the US Navy commissioned a coastal patrol yacht called the USS Aquamarine, named in honor of the gemstone and its connection to the ocean.

For her coronation in 1953, Queen Elizabeth received a gift of an aquamarine necklace and earrings from the President and people of Brazil.  The stones are perfectly matched; according to Leslie Field in The Queen’s Jewels, it took a year to collect them. Brazil continued to collect stones for the Queen following the first gift, and in 1958 presented her with a large brooch and a bracelet to add to the set.

Queen Elizabeth's Aquamarine Tiarra

Queen Elizabeth loved and praised the gift so much that in 1957, she ordered Garrard & Co, London to design and make a matching aquamarine tiara for her. The Brazilian Aquamarine Tiara is still in use today and was last worn in Australia in 2011.

Aquamarines possess a score of 7.5-8 on the hardness scale, which means that they’re durable enough to be worn as jewelry but that you should avoid any rough wear that might scratch them.  The best way to clean your aquamarine jewelry is with plain, warm soapy water (using mild liquid soap). Once you have washed the stone, make sure you rinse it off well with plain warm water.
